Children are not little adults – they have different ophthalmologic problems than adults and also require different examination techniques. It is an honor and a joy to take care of Central Virginia’s children and provide them with a lifetime of sight.
Our pediatric ophthalmology team provides medical and surgical care at the Children’s Pavilion at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond, which opened in 2019 in downtown Richmond. The clinic and operating rooms are centrally located to allow children and their families easy access to other appointments for multi-specialty care. We also treat patients at offices in Stony Point Surgery Center and in Fredericksburg.
We provide comprehensive patient care and resident training in the following treatment modalities:
- Checking visual acuity in children of all ages
- Measuring and diagnosing strabismus
- Spectral domain optical coherence tomography
- High-resolution ultra-wide field fundus photographs
- B-scan ultrasound
- Glaucoma and lens surgery
- Strabismus surgery
- Pediatric plastic surgery

“I have a good time every single day – I use toys, finger puppets, lighted wands, whatever I can to get the examination that I need from a child. I like how active it is and how resilient and joyful children are.”
Education
Residents rotate through the pediatric service during PGY-2 and PGY-3, during which they are exposed to a broad spectrum of pathology. We prioritize surgical training during PGY-2, with the goal of residents becoming primary surgeons on strabismus, chalazion and nasolacrimal duct operations.
Trainees graduate from our program with a comprehensive knowledge of pediatric ophthalmology, and those seeking a fellowship after residency will find the support and preparation they need within the department.
